Ninth Grade Math Classes Online 2017-07-18T22:16:29+00:00

Ninth grade math is another step up in complexity. The first year of high school is generally a trying and complicated time for students, and the mathematics is no exception. More complicated equations and complex concepts are introduced, along with new type of numbers and operations. Students learn about new types of equations, such as linear, irrational numbers, geometry, scientific notation, distance and angles, and the number system. Online high school is a great alternative to traditional high schools because it allows students to learn at their own pace.

Gone are the simple days of whole numbers, simple fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These will still be present, but in far more complex terms. Your student may need extra help understanding these concepts and putting them to execution. We are here to help and will do anything in our power to help your student understand these concepts and apply them efficiently, and to help you teach them to the best of your ability.

Ninth Grade Math

We understand that math is a difficult subject for many people. We take pride in our program and know that in no time, your student will have an effective grasp on this area of study. This outline is a rough example of the types of concepts a student should understand by the end of their ninth grade math year. It is important to remember that each child is different, with unique strengths and, yes, weaknesses. We take pride in our curriculum and are confident that you and your student will have a great learning experience in the world of ninth grade math.

Ninth grade math concepts consist of several topics, but generally the most focus is on general math, algebra, and geometry. There is no true standard of what subjects should be learned in 9th grade math. The math concepts that students should grasp at the end of ninth grade depends on what courses they are taking, along with the National Mathematics Standards.

Numbers and Operations

Numbers and operations ideas center on rational and irrational numbers to solve complex mathematical problems. Students use quadratic equations to solve real-world problems, showing sound solutions. They develop an understanding of vectors and real number systems to solve problems. Students will use vectors and matrices to explain properties and representations that rely on basic math computations by fractions, percents, decimals, and whole numbers. They will learn to employ these concepts through mental math and pencil and paper solutions.

Geometry

Geometry understandings for 9th grade students center on developing knowledge of several multidimensional objects: prisms, pyramids, cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders, and others. They examine the relationships of shapes such as congruence and similarity to solve geometric problems. They use Cartesian coordinates to determine the relationships of two and three dimensional objects.

Ninth graders use and understand geometric translations, reflections, rotations, symmetry, and dilations of objects through the use of sketches and matrices. Students create two and three dimensional objects using assorted tools to describe geometric situations. They use drawings, models, and graphs to make connections of geometric situations in other subject content areas and real world objects.

Algebra

Algebra concepts studied in 9th grade math are relationships to functions such as rates of change. As quoted in Educational Week, by Liana Heitin, “Algebra 1 is a much tougher course than what was taught previously in most states, teachers and standards“. In addition, they use multiple variables for intercepts, zeros, and behaviors. They will discover how to use more widely used algebraic functions through the use of technology, such as graphing calculators and computer programs to solve and represent equations.

Students write and solve equations and inequalities through mental processes, as well as traditional paper and pencil. Student studies involve the applications of manipulation of equations which are logical and symbolic. They will draw reasonable conclusions based on their solutions, as well as making connections with other mathematical concepts.

Measurement

Measurement concepts center on the uses of standard and non-standard (customary) units of measurement to determine relationships between different objects. This is also connected to geometry as they learn how to measure the area, volume, and mass of different geometric shapes using assorted tools. They will know how to measure all aspects of spheres, prisms, pyramids, and others. They learn to use measurements to make drawings and models of equations to explain a solution to a problem in both mathematical and real world terms.

Data Analysis and Probability

In data analysis and probability, students will use appropriate language to explain their findings in experiments and simulations. They will learn to develop questions to help them find the differences between several samples in a population, for example. They will develop studies of situations to include the role of random and experimental surveys. They learn to use and explain the univariate and bivariate in measurement and categorical data. This information is used to develop scatter plots, regression coefficients, and regression equations using technological tools.

Students also study the application of sample statistics for developing explanations using appropriate data analysis. This is used to develop patterns of randomness for the probability that certain events may be independent of other events. They learn to use simulations to explain randomness of events.

Problem Solving

Problem solving for ninth grade math students centers on the development of problem solving strategies to help them develop a fundamental understanding of mathematics. Students use word problems and other real world simulations in problems solving situations.

Representation

Representation concepts focus on students learning to collect and organize data, then using the data to solve problems. Answers are presented as models that are numerical, written, physical, and social. They are able to draw graphs, charts, tables, and other forms to explain how they solved a problem.

Connection

Connection concepts are designed for ninth grade students to demonstrate how to make connections to real world applications and other subject content areas. This includes making connections with other concepts in mathematics.

Communicate

Communicate their mathematics ideas in the form of sentences, drawings, posters, and multimedia applications is another concept that students need to master. This is used to ascertain their level of understanding as they explain mathematical concepts to other students and teachers.

Reasoning and Proof

Reasoning and Proof concepts are used to explain mathematical findings and problem solving techniques. This is necessary so that they develop skills on how to present logical arguments to math situations.

All of these mathematical concepts are used to develop a well rounded base knowledge of mathematical ideas and language as students’ progress to higher levels of mathematics.
